Academic support typically begins with a record review of current evaluations followed by a diagnostic assessment. This process helps me identify the biggest areas of need when it comes reading, writing, math, and executive functioning. From there I typically meet with students 1-2 times a week for 45 minutes- an hour. I create individual lessons based on each unique student. For students with dyslexia, I most often use the Orton-Gillingham approach. I also infuse executive functioning skills into many lessons- especially for students who have both ADHD and dyslexia. In this way we may work on reading, spelling, and math skills at the same time that we are working on attention, impulse control, organization, and planning.
School Advocacy
As a certified and licensed special education teacher, I guide parents in navigating the special education process to help their children better access and succeed in school. Depending on the needs and goals of the family I am working with, I may help them request special education evaluations, IEPs, or specific accommodations. I walk parents through how to prepare for meetings, and attend with them as needed. Together we identify and evaluate dispute resolution options.
Parent and Educator Training
I train parents and educators on how to proactively set up a successful environment for students with dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. I provide guidance, modeling, and coaching on the specific approaches needed based on each student's cognitive profile. I also train parents and educators on how to respond to the behavioral needs associated with ADHD and executive functioning weaknesses.
